We might have an obsession with food in France…. it clearly shows in our funny expressions! Here is a short list with my 10 favorite expressions with fruit and vegetables but there is so much more…
1. Avoir la pêche (Literally = to have the peach)
When a French persons says they “have the peach” it means they have tones of energy, they feel great, in top form!
2. Avoir la banane (Literally = to have the banana)
When someone “has the banana” it means they have a smile all over their face.
3. Avoir le melon (Literally = to have the melon)
Someone who “has the melon” is a big-headed person, someone with an inflated ego.
4. Tomber dans les pommes (Literally = to fall in the apples)
Be careful if someone tells you they are about to “fall in the apples”, it means they are about to faint!
5. Mettre du beurre dans les épinards (Literally = to put butter in the spinach)
When the French say that they have put butter in the spinach it means that they have managed to top up their income.
6. Occupe-toi de tes oignons (literally = mind your own onions)
If a French person tells you to ‘”mind your own onions” what they actually mean is for you to mind your own business.
7. Les carottes sont cuites ! (literally = the carrots are cooked!)
If you are told by a French person that “the carrots are cooked” it means that you are in a hopeless situation!
8. Raconter des salades (literally = to tell salads)
In France we don’t tell lies, we tell “salads”.
9. Ce film est un navet (literally = this movie is a turnip)
If you hear a French person say that a movie is a “turnip”, do not watch it! It means that the movie is very bad!
10. Etre bonne poire (literally = to be a good pear)
You don’t want to be considered a “good pear”, it means that you are quite naive, that people might easily fool you!
